Betsy DeVos Has Been Fighting For This One Thing For Most Of Her Life

Betsy DeVos grew up in Holland, Michigan and attended Holland Christian High School, which is a private school. As a young adult, she studied at Calvin College, which is a private Christian college in Michigan. The town she grew up in highly favored private and charter schools, and the combination of all of these things contributed to her feelings about the educational system in the United States. The problem in the U.S.A. isn’t a lack of private or charter schools but is more a problem related to the affordability of those schools.

Betsy DeVos has discovered, over the course of her life, that a large percentage of people can’t afford to send their kids to a school that they would them to attend. Instead, many American families are forced to sit back and watch as their kids go off to a school based on where they live. DeVos believes this is an outdated system that has no place in today’s world. She has been fighting to see public funds pay for the tuition of children who want to go to a private or charter school. It is an unfortunate truth that many public schools are failing, and many kids in the United States are attending schools where violence is a norm and where they can’t focus on learning.

Betsy DeVos is the daughter of Edgar Prince who is the founder of the Prince Corporation, which is an automobile parts supplier in Michigan. She worked in his store when she was younger and has worked for a lot of her life towards her own success. She married Dick DeVos, the son of the founder of Amway who also served as the company’s CEO for many years. Together, they have used their wealth to support educational causes that help children. Betsy DeVos has donated large sums of her own money towards educational causes, and she has tirelessly been a voice in the wilderness to support educational choice.

Betsy DeVos was asked, during an interview, what success would look like to her; if she was already retired. She commented that she would be a happy retiree if every single American parent, no matter where they lived in the country, had the opportunity to choose the school they sent their kids to. She believes this is the best way to ensure that children have the chance to live up to their fullest potential, and she will continue to fight against a system that she believes is currently failing the very kids it is supposed to protect.
